John’s University, a screenwriter, and has an intense relationship with words. Marcus Benjamin is a danger to the public, an alum of American University, St. He’s a husband and a father so in order to live comfortably, JAY had to die and be reborn as something else entirely. The man’s been trying to kill his persona since 1999, but Shawn Carter’s no longer the hustler.
JAY Z 444 LISTEN SKIN
JAY is a step off because Shawn is a step off and the more pieces of armor stripped off, the more comfortable he becomes back in his own skin and back in the pocket where he belongs. changing his voice to portray different characters or Slick Rick utilizing different accents, Future doing…well, Future doing Future. JAY’s not the first guy to use his flow to tell a story but he is the first to use it in this way. The ego is so necessary for the healing process because staying down in the dumps forever isn’t healthy, and it’s just not a good look. But once the journey is done, his sins confessed, and he’s attempted to right every wrong with everything that he writes, the ego comes back out to play. Listen to “Kill Jay Z” or “4:44” and his voice is off as well. It gives the album that much more depth to know JAY, or Shawn, whichever one, used his flow to tell the story as much as his words. The “point” the man speaks of is when you can look yourself in the mirror and be cool with what’s looking back at you. But it’s secretly Shawn Carter saying, ‘Man, you need a bit of ego.’ It was because of me and the things that I’ve done, this is JAY-Z saying you needed a bit of ego for us to arrive at this point.” “The song ‘Bam’ with Damian Marley it’s just jammin’, it’s just like the song. It’s soul-searching not just soulful, so the flow being a bit off is by design.

Being “on that gospel sh*t” in this context has more to do with honesty and finding truth rather than evangelizing and getting your John the Baptist on. Gospel means good news and while you’d be hard-pressed to find a person who thinks infidelity is the best news in the world to hear, it’s cleansing to speak your truth. But Shawn the man and the artist doesn’t seem to care. From a technical aspect, being in the pocket and finding a rhythm and cadence, the normal MC sh*t we take for granted, the first five songs aren’t pretty. Stammering is normal, being off your game is expected, and prettiness isn’t a prerequisite. There’s no artifice or any armor to hide behind and if you’re doing it right, you’re figuring things out as they come to you. If you’ve ever been to therapy, it’s a lot like that. Gone is the normal confidence and smugness we normally associate with the man and in its place is just a guy and his psyche coming to grips with what his body and mind is responsible for. The first half of the album is stripped down not just sonically, but the Shawn’s emotions are raw. The ego is stripped away, JAY-Z as a persona is zombie-status and only shows flashes of resurrection. The first half of this album is all Shawn Carter.

“F*ck all this pretty Shawn Carter sh*t n*gga Hov! Shawn was on that gospel sh*t.” I was on my way to becoming a member of the peanut gallery screaming at him to “just retire” but then “Family Feud” hit followed by “Bam” and I heard the line that put it all in proper perspective. Then it happened again on “The Story of O.J.,” “Smile,” “Caught Their Eyes,” and parts of “4:44.” The rhymes are on point - that was never in question - but the flow felt lacking and it made me hit an actual screw face on first listen. But maybe it was just for this one joint and it’d be easy to ignore. The liquid flow seemed a tad constipated and the shit wasn’t sweet. A few seconds after the beat kicks in on “Kill Jay Z,” one of JAY ‘s- yeah another name change- greatest gifts seemed to be at odds with the man himself.
